Leadership
Ben Sirman effortlessly led Bridgeville out of segregation with the support of the community behind him. By creating an open, welcoming environment at a summer basketball league, Ben Sirman acted as an ambassador to the African-American community, as well as an example to the white community. He laid the foundation for a smooth transition toward desegregation by relying on his interests, instincts, and morals. The surrounding communities struggled while Bridgeville thrived under his leadership.
Legacy
Ben Sirman's relationship with his players has transcended time. What started out as a backyard league, became a winning team of football and basketball players. Those players became family to each other at a time when neighboring communities struggled to transition toward desegregation. Bridegville became an example to schools throughout Delaware. The pride associated with their accomplishments went beyond athletics, uniting the community for years to come. As a result, Ben's players sought to recognize his contributions to racial equity numerous times. First, they held a banquet, called the Mustang Reunion, in his honor. Then, they successfully recommended him for admission to the Delaware Afro-American Hall of Fame. Finally, celebrating his induction into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame.
