Desegregation in Delaware
In 1959 a plan was formed to desegregate Delaware within a twelve year span. Ben Sirman became head coach in 1966, but he had already gained the trust of athletes with an unofficial backyard league in which all were invited to join. The symbol of that league became a ladle from which all players, black or white, drank water. He seamlessly orchestrated a successful desegregation all while coaching successful teams. All of this was natural for him, he didn't do it to be famous in civil rights, he did it because it was the right thing to do. By the end of the twelve year span many neighboring districts in Delaware still had racial conflict, but Bridgeville did not because of all of Ben Sirman's contributions. He spread trust throughout his athletes and they spread it throughout their families and friends.
Mustang Football
Ben Sirman created one of the only mixed teams in the 1960's. In 1966 and 1967 the Bridgeville Mustangs were undefeated with several African-Americans on the team. Though it may not sound like much, it was extremely desegregated for the time period.
Mustang Basketball
Ben Sirman coached a desegregated basketball team at Bridgeville. His team was very successful and had many championships. He is still in touch with several of his former players as he created such deep relationships.
